HRH launches Heroes Making Heroes, new veteran program driven by food

This spring, Hudson River Housing launched Heroes Making Heroes, a new social enterprise food business operating out of the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory. The Heroes Making Heroes team prepares a menu of affordable hero-style sandwiches at our Poughkeepsie Open Kitchen, which are sold at farmers markets and local events and through catering services. We offer a sliding scale menu that makes good, healthy food accessible.

Heroes Making Heroes provides employment, training and mentorship to local veterans who have experienced homelessness, along with other formerly homeless individuals facing barriers to employment. Heroes Making Heroes recognizes the struggles of homelessness and helps participants build confidence, gain job skills, and earn a wage in a supportive, compassionate work environment.

And as part of our recognition of the interconnectedness of our community’s challenges, part of Heroes Making Heroes’ objective is to give back to the community by addressing local food insecurity. Throughout the year a portion of the food prepared by Heroes Making Heroes is given away for free to households facing food insecurity.

Heroes Making Heroes was initiated by HRH board member Tommy Zurhellen. Learn more about the program in Tommy’s own words here.

You can find Heroes Making Heroes at the Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market on Mondays, and the Arlington Farmers Market on Thursdays, and at special events around the Hudson Valley.

We also offer catering for private and corporate events. Look to us for your next get together!
